Posted in Uncategorized on April 27, 2009 by mc02131

This chapter discusses the importance of news releases, media alerts, and pitch letters. The news release is the most frequently used Public Relations tactic. They “are sent to journalists and editors for possible use in the news columns, and they are the source for a large percent of articles that are published” (PR: Strategies and Tactics, 387). Media alerts allow journalists to be informed about upcoming events news conferences and photo or interview opportunities. Pitch letters are e-mails, letters, or even telephone calls that give journalists and editors story ideas about their employer or client.

10 Important /Suprising Facts I Learned In Into to PR this Semester

This has been a great semester and I have learned many valuable things that will help me out if I decide to make a career in Public Relations after graduation. I learned way more than 10 things I would consider important, but here are a lost of 10 that I thought I would share. Hopefully, I can even help others out with my list. In no particualr order:

1) The first topic we discussed in class was the 4 step PR process: Research (what the problem is), Action (what we are going to do), Communication (how to tell the public), and Evaluation (did you reach the audience and what kind of effect did you have).

2)I learned the Public Relation’s professional makes ethical decisions to satisfy the public interest, the employer, the professional organization’s code of ethics, and his own personal values.

3)I learned that when interviewing for a job it is important to figure out what kind of interview process the meeting is going to be (traditional, panal, or behavioral).

4) It is never good to use the term “General Public” to target an audience, but instead be more specific with an age range, group, and etc.

5)When persuading an audience, do not oversimplify complex situations into simple, two valued, either/or, polar views or choices.

6) When communicating during a crisis never say,”No comment”. It sounds like you or the organization is trying to cover up something when the phrase is used.

7) PR practitioners should use local print and broadcast media to reach diverse publics because of the high credibility.

8)  Hispanics, by 2050 will consist of about 25% of the population, so reaching diverse racial and ethnic groups is becoming much more important for the PR practitioner.

9) PR practioners use computers in many ways which some include: dictation and voice generation, online conferencing, processing of news releases, and desktop publishing. These are just a few of the ways in which the PR pro will use a computer, so familiarity computers is essential.

10)The 5 ways in which publicity materials may be distributed are by mail, fax, email, electronic wire services, and Web pressrooms.

The Best Time of Year: Summer

Posted in Uncategorized on April 16, 2009 by mc02131

Yep, It’s almost that time again. The weather is rapidly warming up and baseball season has begun. This is without a doubt my favorite time of year! No, not because it’s summer and no school, in fact, I’m taking 12 hours of school this summer and I’m still overly excited! A lot of kids would be dreading taking 12 hours, but all I can think about is getting out of class and spending the day at the pool sipping on an ice cold Corona and being able to look forward to watch my favorite team (Atlanta Braves) play later that night. Aghh, summer….does it get any better? This will actually be my first summer here in Statesboro, so i’m especailly excited because it’s only about 45 minutes away from the beach. I can imagine ill be making few trips down to the great city of Savannah this summer. I dont know if it’s true or not but psychologist have come up with a diagnosis called seasonal depression and I think I may have that as sad as it sounds! I dont know what it is, but the summer air just gives me a little “pep in my step” and I couldn’t be happier!

Summary of Ch. 11 for Public Relations

Posted in Uncategorized on April 16, 2009 by mc02131

This chapter brought up some great points about Public Relations and the diverse mutlicultural audience the public relation’s practitioner must be aware of in his/her campaigns and strategies. This is especailly important now more so than ever because “the demographics of the Unites States is becoming more multicultural. Hispanics, by 2050 will constitute about 25 percent of the population….the ethnic media in the country is rapidly developing, and there are many Spanish speaking media outlets”(PR Strategies and Tactics,297). Another group that is growing is the gay community, and as a reslult a number of companies are advertising in gay public relations. I do not believe I have ever seen such a thing, so if somebody can give me an example of a particular case where gay P.R strategies were involved i’d really appreciate it! In a nutshell the United States is more diverse now than ever, and it is essential to the PR practioner to be aware of the different cultures that they are advertising to. A good example of this would be the Atlanta Braves. I’m a huge Braves fan, and on their commercials trying to get people excited for the season I thought it was really interesting how they included the ARMY in there advertising. I thought about it and it definatley seems like a great PR move to have men and women being interviewed wearing ARMY outfits talking about the upcomikng season because that certainly had a positive effect on many viewers who saw the add.
